English: Judge Isaac Parker, the "Hanging Judge" HELD COURT HERE FOR 21 YEARS. HE WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE WESTERN HALF OF ARKANSAS AND THE INDIAN TERRITORY OF PRESENT-DAY OKLAHOMA. HE HELD 13,000 TRIALS IN THIS ROOM RESULTING IN CONVICTIONS OF 9,000. HE SENTENCED 160 TO DEATH BUT ONLY 79 WERE HANGED. NO APPEAL WAS POSSIBLE FOR THE FIRST 14 YEARS. HE BROUGHT LAW AND ORDER TO THE LAWLESS INDIAN TERRITORY.
THIS COURTROOM IS INSIDE THE BARRACKS BUILDING OF THE FORT SMITH NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE.
