Sam Froling moved to draftspace

An article you recently created, Sam Froling, does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Joel Berry Parade AA edit

Hey - Berry didn’t show “first-team” because it was a year where they just named a group without separating it into teams (I think that started in 2012, but you can check the Parade AA article. Rikster2 (talk) 16:00, 17 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for reaching out as I did have some trouble with this. I noticed there was a lack of standardisation with how the award should be displayed for the 2012–2015 selections as some already included the "first-team" while others did not. I elected to go with including the team as that is how it is displayed on the Parade All-America Boys Basketball Team article from 2012, where all selections are listed as being first-team. I respect your authority so ultimately the call is up to you. I can work on returning them if needed. CalDoesIt (talk) 16:28, 17 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Parade AA's

Thanks for helping to complete the 70s list. FYI, there's formatted citiations from orginal newspaper sources at Talk:Parade All-America Boys Basketball Team that you can use. Sports-reference.com is probably fine, but I might be anal and switch it at some point to the "originals". Cheers.—Bagumba (talk) 14:02, 3 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Bagumba: Terrific, thank you for pointing that out. I will complete the rest of the 1970s selections citing those sources. All the best. CalDoesIt (talk) 17:30, 3 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Turns out some of those refs don't list the high school, so sports-reference was still needed. LOL.—Bagumba (talk) 10:40, 11 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Haha, oh well. I will reference both like you have been doing. CalDoesIt (talk) 09:15, 12 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
For 1974, the Parade link has the high school. Did sports-reference.com provide other info there?—Bagumba (talk) 10:43, 12 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Bagumba: There were some slight differences in high school stylings and I used the ordering from Sports Reference. Obviously both minor variations but I thought it was worth noting. CalDoesIt (talk) 11:01, 12 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Got it. Recently, I would just download CSV from sports-reference and cut and paste while formatting for Wikipedia. If I was more skilled and patient I'd write a script, but instead use brute force.—Bagumba (talk) 13:03, 12 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Notice of edit warring noticeboard discussion

Information icon Hello. This message is being sent to inform you that there is currently a discussion involving you at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Edit warring regarding a possible violation of Wikipedia's policy on edit warring. Thank you. Surturz (talk) 06:48, 16 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Just following up on my comment on WP:ANEW, do not revert on the article again or you will be blocked. Once there is a consensus on the talk page, the page can be modified accordingly. Callanecc (talk • contribs • logs) 12:18, 16 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Callanecc: Thank you for coming to this conclusion. The user who reported me has ignored any suggestions in the article's talk page regarding policy violations and refuses to accept any other viewpoint, hence their reverts and subsequent report. What can I do regarding this? CalDoesIt (talk) 12:27, 16 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hopefully they won't revert the article again and it's currently sitting with the dubious tag. In the mean time, continuing to work on Erasmus Sydney's suggestion seems a good way forward. If Surturz chooses not to participate in that discussion that's their decision. Callanecc (talk • contribs • logs) 12:42, 16 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Callanecc: I appreciate your advice. I will see if I can suggest an edit that gains a consensus. All the best. CalDoesIt (talk) 12:49, 16 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I have sent you a note about a page you started

Hello, CalDoesIt

Thank you for creating Kenny Saylors.

User:Eostrix, while examining this page as a part of our page curation process, had the following comments:

Interesting read! I was undecided on notability, but then I realized that WP:NHOOPS has 2nd round draft picks as notable. You did maybe get the draft spot wrong by 1 - http://www.thedraftreview.com/history/drafted1963/Saylors-Ken.htm has him at 18th.

Eostrix (talk) 09:40, 2 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings @Eostrix:, thank you for the successful review and kind words. I can understand the confusion regarding his draft position as Draft Review has their list stylised in a different way than others. There was a territorial pick in the 1963 NBA draft and that is not usually factored into the other draft positions, as can be seen on the Wikipedia article and on Basketball Reference. It can be understandably bemusing so I appreciate your good intentions in explaining and letting me know regardless. All the best. CalDoesIt (talk) 11:33, 2 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I did not know NBA territorial pick were a thing :), learned something new. Well, if these aren't usually counted (though it would make sense to count in 2nd round because these territorial cost 1st rounder), then 17 it is.--Eostrix (talk) 11:52, 2 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Coon biography

Thanks for editing the page on Coon cheese, but the Coon biography is indeed highly relevant.

There are claims that Coon cheese is not named after E. W. Coon -- that he was just a factory hand, and the name was chosen as a racial slur because of the use of black wax. The biography is an important part of the evidence that it was named after Mr Coon.

Please reverse your edit, unless you have evidence that the material you removed was incorrect. If you don't want to, would you mind if I did?

Thanks! LachlanA (talk) 23:26, 16 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings @LachlanA:, thank you for bringing this up with me here without undoing my edits immediately. I obviously agree in the importance of it being known that it was named after E. W. Coon (hence my edits moving it to the lead) but his grandfather's origin, the occupations of his family and their business location could not possibly be relatable to an article that is supposed to be about an Australian cheese trademark. I went through the talk page to see that the excessive biographical nature was mentioned by another editor as a problem. Upon retrospect, perhaps the detail of E. W. Coon working for Kraft at the time of his death should be restored but I hope otherwise you can understand my reasons for trying to trim the article down to what is essential for an understanding on the background of the name.
The alternative history of the name's meaning was a part of the article previously but removed as the claims were apparently "dropped" by the campaigner who made them with no additional historical accuracy included so I am not sure of the worthiness of that inclusion. Many thanks again. CalDoesIt (talk) 04:00, 17 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for the delayed reply. I still think that the family's longer-term connection with cheese is important for the naming controversy. Someone has made a separate section of the naming controversy. Perhaps that would be a place to mention that connection. What do you think? LachlanA (talk) 08:00, 29 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@LachlanA: No worries regarding the delay. My views on the Coon biography have not changed during that time but I will not stand in the way if you wish to add it back. A history of the name in the "Naming controversy" section would work. The article could find greater substantiality if there was more information on the cheese itself but there is only limited information available. All the best. A barnstar for you!

The Teamwork Barnstar
Thanks for completing the lists at Parade All-America Boys Basketball Team, which I started five years ago. —Bagumba (talk) 08:32, 18 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Bagumba: Many thanks for the gesture. I have been meaning to finish the list for a while so I am glad to have finally got around to doing it. Player nationality

I see that you edited some player nationalities in the NBA draft pages. FYI, at one point, the NBA pages reflected how the league defined "international" players—namely, those born outside of the US (see also lead of List of foreign NBA players). This was the rough consensus at one point at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_National_Basketball_Association/Archive_20#Nationality. However, the editor who mainly maintained nationalities is no longer active, and I know I've seen other editors, not just you, bring up "representative nationality". As far as the NBA is concerned, they don't have quotas like other leagues on foreign players, so nationality seem trivial unless we are tracking it from the perspective of the NBA and news coverage about international players getting drafted or winning major awards. It's the reason we don't track nationality on team rosters. Curious what your perspective is.—Bagumba (talk) 09:43, 8 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Bagumba: Interesting read, thanks for sharing. From my perspective and involvement, I have noticed problems on draft pages where it is specifically noted "nationality indicates the player's national team or representative nationality" but players sometimes have their birth countries or dual citizenships listed instead. This requirement is only an issue when used in cases like Hakeem Olajuwon, who naturalised to play for the United States but after he had been drafted as a Nigerian. I concur with User:Chrishmt0423's statements that place of birth creates problems with people born overseas who have no further involvement with that country. I believe that representative nationality should be the primary method used due to its consistency and that it is significant due to the importance of national representation in basketball. I do agree nationality is trivial in team rosters due to your reasons. Is your opinion on the matter the same since your comments in the thread? CalDoesIt (talk) 16:51, 9 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I think the "representative nationality" footnote must have been added some point later, perhaps someone mimicking soccer in a one-size-fits-all manner. It seems readers are missing out if they look at 1984 NBA draft and Olajuwon is listed as American (footnote aside), merely because he got naturalized years later and eventually played for the US national team. On the other hand, FLs NBA Most Valuable Player Award and List of first overall NBA draft picks list him as Nigerian, as many source note him as an "international" player in those contexts.—Bagumba (talk) 18:17, 9 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Bagumba: I had much deliberation over changing Olajuwon from Nigerian to American on the 1984 NBA draft article but based it on his history with the United States national team as per the footnote. Would a representation of dual nationality work best in Olajuwon's case or should I revert it to Nigerian? The soccer-themed draft footnote also creates oddities with naturalised players like Qatari Jarvis Hayes and Filipino Andray Blatche so perhaps a footnote revision could be to the nationality at the time of drafting. CalDoesIt (talk) 18:48, 9 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Your change was consistent with the existing footnote. However, most (all?) NBA FLs seem to use the NBA's view on "international players", which is also echoed by sources that cover the NBA. I'd say to use the NBA's definition if you have the drive to deal with it.—Bagumba (talk) 19:06, 9 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Bagumba: Duly noted. I will undo my edit to conform with the nationality utilised in other lists. CalDoesIt (talk) 19:20, 9 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Creation of articles in CIBACOPA

Hello CalDoesIt, may I ask your help in order to create the missing pages of the teams from the professional basketball league Circuito de Baloncesto de la Costa del Pacífico, which are the following: Gigantes de Jalisco, Mantarrayas de La Paz, Ostioneros de Guaymas and Venados de Mazatlán, I consider the creation of these pages very relevant, being this basketball league the second most important in Mexico. It would be awesome if you can create them. My best regards. 189.139.58.202 (talk) 19:18, 16 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Ways to improve Bill Zubic

Hello, CalDoesIt,

Thank you for creating Bill Zubic.

I have tagged the page as having some issues to fix, as a part of our page curation process and note that:

What is needed are references from significant coverage about this player, and not their own words; in multiple secondary sources which are WP:RS; that is your guide. Lists, Team rosters, pages listing matches and results, databases, Instagram, Soccerway, Facebook, none of these are reliable sources. (There have been changes to the notability guide for sports - see WP:NSPORT ) You may also read WP:PRIMARY which details the limited permitted usage of primary sources. A more comprehensive guide is WP:SOURCES ... Providing sufficient references, ideally giving more information about this player, that meet these criteria is likely to allow this article to remain. Lack of them or an inability to find them is likely to mean that this article is not suitable for inclusion

The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, leave a comment here and begin it with {{Re|Whiteguru}}. Remember to sign your reply with ~~~~. For broader editing help, please visit the Teahouse.

Tony Worrell moved to draftspace

An article you recently created, Tony Worrell, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more in-depth coverage about the subject itself, with citations from reliable, independent sources in order to show it meets WP:GNG. It should have at least three, and currently there are zero. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). Newspapers.com access

Hey meant to ask you before. Did you request access to newspapers.com via Wikipedia for being an editor who would benefit from historical newspaper sources? If not, I highly encourage you to, because it completely changes the article creation game. Finding specific info like high schools attended (for example) is sometimes only found in those historical sources, not in general google searches. If you need guidance on where to go to request access let me know. Just figured you are an editor who'd find value in the access. SportsGuy789 (talk) 17:33, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello @SportsGuy789:, I thank you for letting me know about this as it would be a huge benefit. I have been using the OCR feature on Newspaper.com sources for a long time. I set up my account on The Wikipedia Library and I am "eligible to access Library Bundle partners". Is it really this simple? CalDoesIt (talk) 10:41, 12 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It's pretty simple I think, yup. Go to https://wikipedialibrary.wmflabs.org/partners/26/, log in, and request access specifically to newspapers.com. It might take a bit to get approved (if I recall correctly), but then you'd be good to go. I don't remember every single step along the way but once you're up and running, it's a life saver.
