Incorrect Title

I'd actually contend that the title of this article needs to change. In general American historiography the Army during time is called the "Frontier Army," not the "Army on the Frontier."Intothatdarkness (talk) 15:02, 10 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'd agree that this is a problematic title. During the short-lived Black Hawk War of 1832, the designation in official correspondence of General Atkinson was "Army of the Frontier" (same as the later Union army formation, the Army of the Frontier). I've found no evidence that "Army on the Frontier" (current title), or "Frontier Army" for that matter, were ever used as official names. But you do see the phrases used, generally without a lot of capital letters, as a sort of general description, i.e. "the Army on the frontier", or "the frontier Army". So if we really need an article about the US Army's role on the western frontier (and we may not), our best bet is probably a simple descriptive title, such as History of the United States Army on the frontier. But perhaps a better approach would simply be to redirect this article to a section on the frontier in History of the United States Army, since the frontier is so poorly covered in that article. —Kevin Myers 19:27, 9 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Frontier Army is acceptable in historical writing (based on Robert Utley's work, although others have called it the Old Army as well), but it's not used in the way this article seems to be using it. I'd say either redirect as you mention or delete. It would need some work if it were to be redirected or merged just based on many content errors, though.Intothatdarkness (talk) 20:22, 22 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Looking back through this, I'm not a fan of merging this into the History of the United States Army. The Army's role in frontier settlement has been documented in many cases (Texas being the most common, but Texas history tends to dominate some parts of Frontier history). If it does fold into the general history article, it's going to need a lot of work.Intothatdarkness (talk) 17:54, 14 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Isn't this article a duplication of this one?

That is a question I've asked myself regarding this article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Army_of_the_Frontier. Could someone help me to show the difference between these both pages? --Embu wiki (talk) 21:13, 8 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

No. The Army of the Frontier is a Civil War formation distinct from the concept discussed in this article. Intothatdarkness 17:42, 14 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
