The information about the boundaries is incorrect, if you search the DC Atlas [1] for Real Property and Assessment Neighborhoods you will find the correct boundaries as defined by the city. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.108.255.234 (talk) 12:56, 27 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's true that, for real estate assessment purposes, Brightwood extends significantly further than the definition currently used by the Brightwood Community Association. A house in the 900 block of Hemlock Street is considered part of Brightwood for real estate assessment purposes, for example, when that area is considered Takoma by many (most?) other agencies and people. In response to the unsigned comment from 2007...I'd agree with Quacks Like a Duck, that with neighborhood boundaries "it all come down to who is making the distinction." In some cases, more specific neighborhood identities develop that aren't always clearly identified by the broader Brightwood neighborhood definition the city uses for real estate assessments. However, given Quacks Like a Duck's point that "for real estate assessment purposes, Brightwood extends significantly further than the definition currently used by the Brightwood Community Association," it's important to also acknowledge that along some borders the opposite holds true; in some places the Brightwood Community Association's definition (which is used as the source to portray the most likely boundaries on this Brightwood page) actually extends out further than the city's Brightwood boundaries.

For instance, if you look at a house south of Missouri Avenue and east of Georgia Avenue, other sources will tell you that that house is in Brightwood Park--a similarly named but different neighborhood. And if you look at a location south of Missouri Avenue, west of Georgia Avenue, north of Kennedy Street, the DC city atlas will tell you that it's located in the 16th Street Heights neighborhood, not Brightwood. http://citizenatlas.dc.gov/atlasapps/reports.aspx?showreport=239791&QString=

Thanks for your comments, Etopdc. After further research about Brightwood, I have learned that the original boundaries of Brightwood were just as vague as they are today. Brightwood was considered far larger than we considered it today. Over 150 years ago, Brightwood included land that is now considered to be Shepherd Park, Takoma Park, Brightwood Park, and Petworth. ~ Quacks Like a Duck (talk) 23:32, 16 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
