Summary

Description
English: Looking south across Section 30 at Arlington National Cemetery. Custis Walk is in the middle ground. The upright granite structure with glass panels in the background is the Women in Military Service for America Memorial. Originally known as the Hemicycle, this ceremonial entrance to Arlington National Cemetery was opened in 1932. Along the Arlington Memorial Bridge and the George Washington Memorial Parkway (then known as the Mount Vernon Memorial Parkway), it was constructed in celebration of the bicentennial of George Washington's birthday. Unfinished, unused, and in disrepair by the early 1980s, it was transformed into the Women in Military Service for America Memorial and opened to the public on October 20, 1997.
