  • Bernard Tobey was a U.S. sailor who lost his arms in the Battle of Fort Fisher. Tobey toured the United States with his son to raise money. (Source: Detroit Free Press, Nov. 7, 1866)
  • Printed on verso: ""Glory to the Union! The Stars and Stripes Forever!" Stanton's Official Dispatch, Dated Tuesday, Jan. 17th, 1865. Troops arrive at Fort Fisher, Thursday, Jan. 12th; were landed Friday, Jan. 13; assault made Sunday, at 3 1/2 o'clock, P.M.; fight lasted seven hours; at 10 o'clock the Rebels were driven from the Fort, and at Midnight, Sunday, the Rebel Gen. Whiting surrendered to Terry. Explosion on Monday, Jan. 16th, between 6 and 7 o'clock, A.M. Bernard Toby."
