This really begs the question: the source cited for the brief mention of Cpl. Smith's deed at Honey Creek is the citation itself for the posthumously awarded Medal of Honor. Yet the attempt to have the medal awarded him while he was living was denied, because Cpl. Smith's commanding officer made no mention of any such deed.

What, then, was the basis for the award? Surely something more than Mr. Smith's own recollection, or an eager politician's playing the race card.
