Summary

Description
English: This photo, taken in September, 2010, shows a portion of the original (1896) part of the central magazine galleries that served the Ft. Banks mortar batteries.

This portion of the tunnel lies at the Battery Kellogg (east) end of the tunnel system. The photo looks north across the ammunition storage room that is at the base of the triangular "end piece" of the long, central tunnel, through a small doorway just west of the steps that descend about 4 ft. from the traverse of the Battery Kellogg flank magazines, which is at the level of the mortar pit floors.

The arched room shown here is 14 ft. wide, and the distance between the camera and the far wall is about 20 ft. Another 10 ft. or so of the room lies behind the camera. The small circular window in the far wall was a lantern port, allowing an oil lantern to be used to light this room from the far side of the wall without admitting a flame to this room itself.

The debris on the floor (and protruding from center-left) is a modern left-over from previous use of the space as a Halloween "haunted house." The electric light fixtures were added some time during the past 20 years and are now non-functional.

The corridor opening at left-rear connects to the angled corridor that runs NE-SW around the outer edge of the triangular-shaped "end piece" of the central tunnel and connects to the long corridor of that tunnel.
