As the name implies, these are primaries that are held to allow voters to select the delegates to the national convention of their choice, in this case being the Republican Convention in Cleveland. That many of these were more hotly contested and participated in then the Presidential Primaries should be of enough to note their importance in these earlier contests. However, because a voter was often intended to support multiple candidates for the position of delegate, this leaves a murky situation where we don't often know what the total vote IS, and in most cases I have had little luck finding that information. You might find an article detailing how many times a voter is supposed to vote, in Wisconsin for example in this year it would be four, but there were plenty of cases of people being dumb where they either under-voted or, as was most often the case in this example, voted seven times to elect the entire La Follette slate. It is important that this information be in the article in some form, but without clear indications of what the vote totals were in these cases, we can't use them for the purposes of tallying up a candidates vote.
