In the book, the airport was in Cleveland, Ohio, not Chicago, Illinois. I believe this is also true of the film.

Untrue - there are a variety of references to locations in Chicago in the book; the film deals little with its' surroundings, but is still organized as set in Chicago. Additionally, an airport in Illinois - the "Land of Lincoln" - would have all the reason in the world to be named Lincoln; an airport in Cleveland would have little reason to glorify Lincoln in such a manner. This article reads like crap. Someone needs to write a separate article concerning the book.

(01/06/07) This article reads very badly. Much of the main body of the article reads as though it belongs in the Trivia section. The whole plot section is a comparison/contrast between the film and the book, and I'm not sure such an in-depth look at the book belongs in an article about the film. It is probably enough to state that there are numerous differences between the novel and the film without enumerating every single one of them.

Additionally, the article follows no logical progression. For example, it states that George Kennedy is the only actor to star in all four Airport films long before it points out that there actually ARE four Airport films.

This article might benefit from stripping the whole thing down and starting over. (Justrd)

Then is the wikipedia article on the B-707 wrong? It lists the cruising speed of a boeing 707 model 120b as 540 kt/hr, or 1000 km/hr, which, if correct, translates to appx. 620 statute miles per hour.

Wikipedia article on Boeing 707 lists its range at 3680 nautical miles. With a refueling stop or two, a B707 could have made it from Chicago to Rome (appx. 4200 nautical miles). 169.253.4.21 11:49, 21 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The ground speed of 610 mph has nothing to do with the top speed of a 707, which is given as air speed. Ground speed is air speed plus any tail wind (likely on a trip from the US to Europe) or minus any head wind.

The airport is definitely in Chicago in both the book and the film. The first line of the book references the location as "Lincoln International Airport, Illinois"; Joe Patroni is mentioned as living in Glen Ellyn, a suburb of Chicago, 25 miles from the airport; as well as other mentions of The Windy City in the book. In the film after takeoff, Vernon Demerest clearly states that the weather in Rome "is a lot better than what we left behind in Chicago".Dma124 22:00, 20 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

For a couple of years now this article has been saddled with an incredibly detailed blow-by-blow account of the film in lieu of a plot summary. Well done! A lot of work needs to be done on many of our movie articles, getting rid of excessively long plot "summaries". Tonight, I integrated the trivia section, dumping some of the more trivial facts and incorporating the rest where I thought they would go best - some into production, others into score, and one into a link at the bottom. CMA and Cox cable listings had this movie, upon it's TCM airings, as four stars. Encore/Starz airings at 3.5 stars. Anyways, I don't have any citations, so just leave it be for now. Apple8800 (talk) 10:13, 19 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Read the book while the movie was in production, knew Burt Lancaster and Dean Martin would play the leads, and pictured Burt Lancaster as the hot-tempered pilot with the dramatic scene of being pulled down the plane's aisle and Dean Martin as the easy-going airport manager as I read the novel. I was flabbergasted when I learned that they'd cast the film so counterintuitively, with Dean Martin in the flashier part. I've always thought there was some odd story behind that but never found out what it was. Is there anyone out there who happens to know more about this? I'm absolutely positive that Kathy Bates had a very minor role in the movie as the 'operator' who verified that there was a flight to Rome when Mrs. Guerrero called about it.

I tried IMDb and Bates' entry to see if her role was listed. It wasn't at either place.
