My mother (who grew up in Exeter and presumably heard this from her mother who would have been an adult at the time the IOKA theater was built) always claimed that the story of the naming of the IOKA theater is included in the book "Peyton Place" (which I have never read), and that is that the man who painted the theater was named "Kelly" and he disappeared before he ever got paid for the job. Thus, "IOKA" is supposed to mean "I Owe Kelly All" - whether this is was a myth or just an old joke I don't know, but what is the source for the story about a contest to name the theater? Note - don't take pictures from the town website. Unless they are specifically released as public domain, we can't really use them. BTW, thanks for your efforts, Beancounter603! The historical section of the article not surprisingly talks about the "falls", and a painting refers to "Squamscott Falls" (1907). It would help if the location of the falls where identified; that is, is does the Exeter flow over these falls into the Squamscott, or perhaps the falls are downriver of the confluence of the Exeter into the SquamScott, or some other location? Perhaps the Exeter ends at the falls, but the falls are known as the "Squamscott Falls" because that is where the river of that name begins? This information would be helpful to understand the significance of the falls.

I added to the first sentence in the history section. The falls are smack in the center of town. My understanding is that since the Exeter is the freshwater river and the Squamscott is the tidal, then the falls are part of the Exeter, but that's kind of splitting hairs. Seen another way, the falls are the end of the Squamscott, because that's as far as tidal river vessels could go. The falls are at least 6 meters high (from the topo maps), but they're not vertical; they fall at a slant over a hundred meters or so.--Ken Gallager (talk) 12:52, 20 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
