Houston Strikers

Was the team going to be called the Houston Strikers? or HS already existed (founded 2016?) and became the Sabercats? Tortillovsky (talk) 15:42, 9 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Tortillovsky: The Houston Strikers was the name of the rugby team that SaberCats' founders Jeremy Turner & Marty Powers played together on many years ago. That club played as the Strikers in some form or fashion from 1974 to circa 1993. Turner & Powers chose an originating name that best fit their vision. When the Loya Brothers and the Gees became owners of the Houston MLR club in 2017, they wanted a different name and color scheme. Some marketing research was conducted and the Houston SaberCats was eventually agreed upon. --GrantAdamCole (talk) 16:28, 2 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@GrantAdamCole: Your reply clarifies things. Thank you. Tortillovsky (talk) 20:36, 2 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Logo change

The logo is incorrect. Please change the logo to one with a yellow head on a black background. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Thynecoffee (talk • contribs) 22:05, 5 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Thynecoffee: What's the license status of that logo? —C.Fred (talk) 23:34, 5 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

C.Fred As far as I am aware, the logo with text only (no head) is not copyrighted. I can confirm that if need-be. —thynecoffee

@Thynecoffee: Yes, we need to confirm that either the logo is so simple that it doesn't qualify for copyright or that the club has donated the logo under a free license or into the public domain. If it's the latter, and if the image is not posted on a club page with its license status clear, then somebody from the club will need to email from their official email account to confirm the status. WP:Donating copyrighted materials has details on the process. —C.Fred (talk) 19:36, 6 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

C.Fred Hello, I am part of the Houston SaberCats club, I can confirm the logo via email. How shall I proceed with doing this? Zagzigzac (talk) 20:45, 1 October 2018 (UTC)Zagzigzac (talk) 20:42, 1 October 2018 (UTC) Zagzigzac[reply]

@Zagzigzac: Follow the instructions at WP:VRT for contacting the Volunteer Response Team via email. (You'll need to use your work/club email.) They'll be able to provide more details on how to confirm the release. —C.Fred (talk) 23:23, 1 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Current Squad

The 11 January 2019 SaberCats roster versus the Austin Elite in pre-season play names three (3) players to the bench who are not yet signed to the SaberCats, but are on trial: Liam Andrews (often listed as Liam Scott in error, b/c his middle name is Scott and Liam Scott is how he manages his Social Media handles), Irving Carcamo, and Rodrick Waters. It also lists Joe Kelly who is signed, but not announced (work in progress). --GrantAdamCole (talk) 13:38, 11 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@86.177.22.91 NOTE: Alex Elkins will not be playing Wing for the SaberCats this season. Alex has been training with the Forwards all Fall and has been positioned at flanker in the West Houston Lions match against the Austin Huns on 27 Oct 2018 [1] and at 8-man in the West Houston Lions match against the Dallas Harlequins on 15 December 2018 [2]. West Houston plays a D1 squad that features Sr Academy SaberCats and SaberCats' Associate Players to ensure they get adequate high quality competition minutes at their position when they are not playing for the SaberCats. As the Manager of West Houston D1 team, it is my responsibility to input the roster to the USA Rugby CMS prior to match day and I receive that roster from Coaches Fitzpatrick and Emerick during a coaches meeting on the matter. --GrantAdamCole (talk) 20:25, 4 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@86.177.22.91 Further regarding Alex Elkins moving to the back row can be found in the ref [3] --GrantAdamCole (talk) 05:20, 5 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The headers of the Current Squad list have a column for Union. However, in the source this data is indicated as "nat" for Nationality. The union these players have historically played under and their nationality are two different things.

For example,

  • Pat O'Toole is Irish by nationality, but is in the Eagles Pool as a USA Select (representing the USA at the developmental stage of the international game) [4].
  • Chris Parker is from England, but is a former HS & College Rugby All-American [5].
  • Kieran Farmer is indeed Scottish, but has also represented the USA at the Junior All-American level.
  • While Matt Trouville has represented the USA as an Eagle, he is most definitely Australian (being born in NSW).

Several other MLR teams have similar inconsistencies in their squad listings. Nationality and Union mean two different things in rugby. How might we reconcile this issue properly? GrantAdamCole (talk) 16:18, 2 January 2019 (UTC)--GrantAdamCole (talk) 16:18, 2 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
