As part of a class assignment, I am planning on writing a new article on Worker's Rights in U.S. Meat and Poultry Plants. It will also be a part of the WikiProject Organized Labour; as it's related to the Labor Rights page, I would really appreciate any feedback on my proposed content. To make sure the proposed article is focused, its scope will be limited to conditions and implications of American meat and poultry production plants during the 20th and 21st centuries. As of now, I intend on writing a section on the characteristics of American meat production plants, with a subsection on the demographics of workers in the industry, which includes content on the non-immigrant, legal immigrant, and illegal immigrant workers. The second section of the article will cover the implications and consequences for workers, with subsections on mental and emotional and physical effects. The fourth section will examine policy and legislation related to workers' rights in slaughterhouses and poultry plants as well as looking at international and domestic employment protections. Last, to ensure all perspectives are represented, the article will include a section on industry response.

I have already identified a number of scholarly articles and books as sources for this proposed article. To name a few, the revised edition of An Unfair Advantage: Workers' Freedom of Association in the United States under International Human Rights Standards by Lance Compra, and Slaughterhouse Blues: The Meat and Poultry Industry in North America (2nd edition) by Donald Stull and Michael Broadway should be useful monographs. I intend on complementing these books with articles from the USDA Agricultural Economics Reports, the International Archives of Occupational and Environmental Health, the Georgetown Journal on Poverty Law & Policy, the Journal of Politics and Society, and the Population and Development Review. I would really appreciate any feedback on the proposed content or any issues you might foresee, as well as any suggestions for other scholarly sources. Section(s) on history of labor rights need to be added. In which countries was the right to organize legalized, and in which year? A complete listing/history. \

Secondly, in which countries was the right to strike legalized, and in which year? I've been googling for a while and have only very partial information. Reference to United Arab Emirates as "leaving little recourse" to immigrant workers is not mentioned in linked articles. The note involving UAE states there are laws against confiscating Passports and the like, but does not referance any laws. In fact, the United States also confiscates travel documents, and I daresay most countries do. Therefore, the note singling out UAE was removed as an inappropriate example. --User 71.161.193.55

The sources do mention limited recourse: "Hundreds of thousands of low skilled, poorly paid (often unpaid) South Asians work in the UAE in substandard living conditions without any rights or recourse for alleged abuses" ([http://lcweb2.loc.gov/frd/cs/profiles/UAE.pdf UAE Country Profile, p. 13), and the problem in the UAE is not that the government confiscates passports, but that the employers do. This is illegal, but done anyway. Employers abuse this practice and limit worker mobility. This is what makes it noteworthy. Straightinfo removed this section again with an edit summary saying "revert, change explained in talk, reference does not mention passports." The references do indeed mention passports. In fact, part of the removed text is a cited quote that says "withholding of passports nd travel documents by employers."[1] [[2] This article], which was also part of the removed section, discusses passports too. For example, the sentence "And a U.S. State Department report on worldwide human trafficking faults the U.A.E. and other Gulf states for commonplace labor abuses like withholding pay and passports." Clearly, the references do mention passports, so I think the section should stay.--Bkwillwm 08:06, 12 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, this is something for editors of this page to bare in mind: there is also an article on labour and employment law. The article is very underdeveloped, but has quite a detailed structure, which, if possible, it would be great to fill in. Basically, I'm pointing this out so that editors can either consider a merger, or a clear line of demarcation between the two. I've posted a similar notice on the talk page of the other article. Hi,

My edit was removed for being off topic [3], but I respectfully disagree with that notion. The labor abuses slaughterhouse workers face is very relevant to this article.
