train image

laurel has an image of a train for it's skyline image. It would be nice if there was an image of the city but there is not one in commons that I have found. Just reading the Laurel article will explain why the train works if nothing else is available. At one time there was a grain silo image that really didn’t work.

  • I appreciate the sentiment but it's a diesel locomotive in the middle of Oklahoma. Mackensen (talk) 02:39, 12 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Further, it's completely wrong to assert that Montana Rail Link only operates in Montana, though of course most operations are there. The company's main line extends west to Spokane, Washington through Idaho. Also, it's not uncommon for company locomotives to see service on other routes, hence the presence of this locomotive in Oklahoma sandwiched between Union Pacific locomotives. This image isn't at all appropriate. It's not even representative of MRL: it's a one-off EMD SD19-1 conversion that the company doesn't even own anymore. Mackensen (talk) 01:31, 13 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Oh my goodness what is your point? Regardless of where it was shot, most likely was in Montana, a Montana Railink engine like this an everyday all day long image in Laurel. Montana Railink has a mayor rail yard in Laurel. Sara goth (talk) 03:52, 13 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • My point is simply that illustrating a city with an image of a random freight locomotive isn't appropriate. I'm not the first person to think so. Further, as I've indicated, this isn't even appropriate for the reasons you're arguing. This particular locomotive isn't a common one for that area, the image isn't of that yard, and I don't think (though I'm uncertain) that UP locomotives are common on MRL territory. Because of this image use, a Montana Rail Link locomotive in Oklahoma is now a top hit on Google Image search for "Laurel Montana" even though it's not an image of Laurel, Montana. Note that there are a couple freely-licensed photos available on Flickr [1]. One depicts the water treatment plant (not so good); two depict the Nez Perce National Historic Trail (better, eh). I can import those easily if they would be used. Mackensen (talk) 11:33, 13 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Caption

I'm frankly puzzled by the revert of my edit inserting a caption: [2]. The edit is entirely factual: the image is a picture of an MRL locomotive in Oklahoma, and MRL has a large presence in Laurel. What's the problem? Mackensen (talk) 21:49, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

This is a page about Laurel, Montana not Oklahoma. It is confusing and completely unnecessary. Linda Rider (talk) 14:36, 10 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

  • I agree. If you'll note above I tried to have the image removed on the grounds that it was completely inappropriate to have an image from Oklahoma illustrating an article about a city in Montana. The caption is truthful; it's the image that's confusing. This use of the image is now polluting Google Image results: that image now appears if you do a Google Image search for Laurel, Montana. I confess that I've never seen an article where multiple users were so insistent on having an image which not only did not depict the skyline of the city in question, but was not even taken in the same state. If we're going to have this image then we need to be honest with our readers about what the image depicts. If we can't do that because it's too embarrassing, then maybe we shouldn't have the image at all. Mackensen (talk) 16:09, 10 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • I have added an image from Laurel; it depicts Riverfront Park. There are other images from Laurel available on Wikimedia Commons (linked from the bottom of the article). Mackensen (talk) 17:11, 10 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
