Fastball more like 90-91 MPH

not a big deal but as any Giants fan can tell you, his fastball is typically 89-91 MPH and occasionally hits 92...check MLB Gameday of July 24th, 2010...

http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/gameday/index.jsp?gid=2010_07_24_sfnmlb_arimlb_1&mode=gameday

it seems he has lost a few MPH off the fastball and it looks like it could be permanent at this point... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.126.151.191 (talk) 04:50, 25 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

What was the speed in Game Five of 2014 World Series? 99mph? It was amazing! -- Charles Edwin Shipp (talk) 19:15, 29 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

indeed, the current paragraph herein says: "Bumgarner's repertoire consists of four pitches. He features a four-seam fastball in the 90 to 93 miles per hour (145 to 150 km/h) range that tops off at 95 mph ..." -- Charles Edwin Shipp (talk) 19:21, 29 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

birthplace

The lead paragraph says he was born in Lenoir, but the infobox says "Hudson". Eagle4000 (talk) 18:40, 3 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

"Bumtown"

The article says that Hickory is called "Bumtown" (sourced from a Yahoo sports aticle). But I'm from Morganton (very close by), and I've lived in this area my whole life, and I've never heard it called that. I suggest that this is an invention by the writer.

According to this Yahoo sports article, which seems well-researched, the nickname is for an area about 10 miles away from Hickory, and the nickname goes back 100 years. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 04:23, 27 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

It be called Bumtown because when Bumgarner pitch he make everyone look like bums. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.242.208.201 (talk) 12:21, 30 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I'm from the same town, and I've also never heard of Bumtown. I also polled a few local historians, none of them have heard of it either. Its use may be limited to the family, or immediate residents of that neighborhood. Kel (talk) 22:48, 30 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Steroids

There's been speculation about him using steroids. The Kansas City media suspected it. Anyone else pick up on this? Add it to the article?2602:304:CFD3:2EE0:E918:696A:2091:36CA (talk) 01:13, 7 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I see no discussion in any reliable sources about this. Can you link to any? Our policy on biographies of living people is quite firm that we require very solid sources for something contentious. We simply don't include random allegations or speculation. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 02:17, 7 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Proseline

In addition to unsourced additions, the 2014 and 2015 subsections are suffering from WP:PROSELINE. Can somebody work on this? – Muboshgu (talk) 16:36, 28 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I tweaked the 2015 paragraphs a bit to help reduce the proseline. The sourcing still needs to be added and reviewed. AngusWOOF (barksniff) 17:41, 28 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Greatly appreciated. I may have time to look for sources later. This is a GA, and it needs to be kept up. – Muboshgu (talk) 17:45, 28 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The article also needs to be checked that these record-breaking events are really noteworthy. There are a lot of firsts, but also "firsts since" which aren't that notable if the year is like 2012 or if it's just some obscure intersection of stats recognized by only a few reporters, like "first pitcher to throw ten strikeouts and do a pirouette while coming off the previous week as a National League Player of the Week." AngusWOOF (barksniff) 01:13, 29 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Records listed in infobox

The "MLB records" section of the infobox is getting a little lengthy. Wouldn't it be better to only list major records? Like the ones he's most known for. Surely some of those would fit better in the lead rather than the infobox. Lizard (talk) 05:14, 21 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I'd get rid of any of the "first since" records, which aren't really setting any records, unless he tied with someone. AngusWOOF (barksniff) 18:30, 21 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Reviewer: Hog Farm (talk · contribs) 03:48, 10 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I'll take this review. Don't expect the first comments for a couple days, I was without a computer for awhile and have some stuff to catch up on RE various GAN nominations and an A-class review of an article I worked on. Given the length of the article and the number of refs, the review may be slow to. I'll get it done pretty timely, though. Hog Farm Bacon 03:48, 10 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Lead

  • "He and Buster Posey both made their major league debuts in 2009, and have since established a reputation as one of the best batteries in recent MLB history" - I don't think the present tense in the second half of the sentence is appropriate, as they are no longer a battery. Maybe just drop "have since"
  • Link innings in the lead.
  • There are a ton of overlinks in the lead

Early life

  • Link curveballs
  • "Next season, he went 11–2" - Maybe "The next season, ..."?
  • It's probably worth linking MVP

Draft and minor leagues

  • Link side-arm delivery
  • Earned run average and strikeouts have already been linked in the previous section, no need to link them again.
  • Link Spring Training

2010

  • Link rotation to Starting rotation
  • Link pinch-hitting
  • Link run batted in
  • Specify the opponent in the 2010 NLCS
  • "In Game 4 of the World Series, Bumgarner pitched eight shutout innings, while allowing only three hits and one Ranger to reach second base, for his first career World Series win" - Explicitly state the Giants were playing the Texas Rangers, and link the Rangers

2011

  • " Bumgarner pitched 8 2⁄3 and allowed one run in the ninth inning" maybe this would be better as "Bumgarner pitched 8 2/3 innings before allowing a run in the ninth"

2012

  • "On June 12 at AT&T Park, in a 6–3 win over the Houston Astros, Bumgarner hit his first major league home run and also struck out twelve batters, becoming the first Giant to hit a home run and strikeout ten or more batters in the same game since Mike Krukow" - How significant this is is not readily determined without providing a year for Krukow's feat
  • "With a win on May 5, Bumgarner became the first Giant since Jason Schmidt to win fourteen games in a twenty-game span.[38]" - Ditto as above
  • Find a way to combine the paragraphs in this section, they are all very short
  • Did Bumgarner pitch in the NLDS or the NLCS in 2012? It should at least be mentioned that he pitched in whatever postseason games, even if he didn't do anything spectacular
  • Link AT&T Park and state whether that is home or away directly

2014

  • " ending his consecutive scoreless innings on the road streak at 32 2⁄3 He earned the win in the Giants' 7–1 triumph" - Either make He lowercase or add a full stop
  • "In three pitching appearances, Bumgarner gave up one run in 21 World Series innings and pitched 52 2⁄3 total innings in the postseason[72] " - This sentence also lacks a full stop
  • He got a save in Game 7 of the '14 Series [2]. That's worth mentioning explicitly, instead of waiting until his final postseason line to mention he got a save without specifying which game it was in.

2015

  • Didn't he start Opening Day in '15 for the Giants? I think that's worth mentioning
  • "and strikeout two hundred batters in a single season" - I think the verb form is strike out

2016

  • I may be wrong, but didn't he start Opening day again?
  • "Bumgarner hit another home run off of Kershaw, joining Troy Tulowitzki and Daniel Murphy as the only three players to have homered off of Kershaw multiple times" - No longer accurate. [3] Rephrase or remove
  • Link Pinch runner

2018

  • "This time, it was a broken finger suffered in a spring training." - Should this be "a spring training game" or "in spring training"?

Pitching style

  • Seems really random to reference Brett Cecil in here.
  • Link curveball in the early life section, not in here
  • The velocity and pitch frequency stats are from 2014. A lot happens in five seasons of a pitcher's career, so newer stats in comparison would be helpful.

Career highlights

  • "Bumgarner has hit 18 career home runs as a pitcher" - MLB.com has him at 19. Presumably, this is just an update issue, as the access date for the citation supporting 18 is from 2014

Awards

  • I know the awards not cited in the table are cited above in the prose, but given that readers may not remember that, it's gonna look a lot better to recite here
    • Added in some more. To keep the table from getting too long, I opted not to include awards he's finished high in voting for (i.e.--third in NL Cy Young voting) and awards for levels other than the major leagues (college, minor leagues). Sanfranciscogiants17 (talk) 18:23, 19 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Personal life

  • "built the log house the younger Bumgarner grew up in" - Already stated in the early life
  • " Bumgarner had a half-sister, Dena, who died in 2010 after accidentally overdosing on pain medication following hospitalization[169] from cancer.[5]" - I'm not sure if it's necessary to state the OD, since Dena wasn't a public figure
    • I think we should leave it in there. People who read this are going to be wondering why a half-sibling (presumably somewhat close to his age) is dead already. Dena's relation to Bumgarner makes her notable. Sanfranciscogiants17 (talk) 18:25, 19 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

MLB records

  • Link Win probability added
  • 2014 World Series is overlinked
  • "Most starts in a single postseason: 6, 2014 (tied with Curt Schilling, 2001, Chris Carpenter, 2011, and Corey Kluber, 2016)" - Verlander 2019 has joined the club [4]

References (will comment as I go along on these)

  • "Raising Matt Cain (A Baseball Blog)" is not a reliable source
  • Ref 1 needs the date
  • Ref 6 - Avoid the all caps in the article title, even it it's in the source
  • Ref 14 is dead (baseball America 2007)
  • The SBNation main site might be acceptable, but the team sites (mccovey chronicles) have much lower editorial oversights/standards, do probably shouldn't be used
  • Bay Area Sports Guy looks rather self-published, the author would need to have very good credentials for it to be reliable
  • Source stylization should be consistent. Pick a consistent way to deal with each individual source. Baseball-refernce, Bleacher Report, NBC Sports, and CBS Sports all have this issue that I've noticed. Hog Farm Bacon 01:15, 14 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Ref 68 (krocnews) - Avoid the ALL CAPS in the title
  • Jewish Baseball News states "Custom Wordpress website by RDesign Tampa Bay Florida" at the bottom. Wordpress is a big self-published blog hosting site, so this source is likely below the bar for citing personal details in BLP articles.

There's a ton of overlinks in the whole article. There's a script for highlighting them, but I forget what it's called. A spot check of the reveals it's all supported (there are some outdated things). All but one of the refs I checked works. A handful of the refs are to unreliable sources. @Sanfranciscogiants17: - I've gone through the first pass. This one'll need some work, which is to be expected of an article of this length. Hog Farm Bacon 03:17, 18 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Sanfranciscogiants17: - I was actually referring to making sure all of the rows in the table had a citation. Since it's all cited in the prose previously, it's more of a presentation issue than a citation issue, so I'm comfortable with passing this article. Hog Farm Bacon 19:27, 19 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Removed tag

I removed the overly-detailed tag from the 2016 section, as that section seems to be rather trimmed. Hog Farm Bacon 05:02, 15 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Completely incoherent almost-sentence

... which reads, in full:

"On May 19, 2011, at Dodger Stadium, in a 3–1 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers, Bumgarner pitched with the worst era with it being a 35.3 ERA 2009 All-Star Dodger pitcher Chad Billingsley."

I have no idea in the world what that's supposed to mean. Does anyone? 192.34.130.202 (talk) 19:35, 29 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Lord only knows what it means. It was added on May 7, 2022, by an editor who commented that they "fixed" it. :) Good eye. I restored the original wording. Larry Hockett (Talk) 20:30, 29 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
