population

The population of Saint John,NB is 74,126 people uptown but the Metropolitan area population is 126,293 people over the past years this city has changed and grow in somany different ways this is one of them.

Someone seems to have played with the population figure again: "According to a mid-2005 survey, there were 2 people residing in the Greater Saint John area, of whom 48.1% were male and 51.9% were female. I moved these from under footnotes:

"According to Alan Rayburn's 'Geographical Names of New Brunswick', which was published by the Canadian Permanent Committee on Geographical Names, the county is spelled in its entirety, while the river is "commonly abbreviated." However, according to the 'Gazetteer of Canada', both the river and the county are spelled in their entirety. Additionally, in the Territorial Division Act (http://www.gnb.ca/acts/acts/t-03.htm), the county is spelled in its entirety.

Communications New Brunswick follows the Canadian Press format, which is to spell out the names of the city, harbour and county, and abbreviate the name of the river.

So while not definitive, it appears that St. John River and Saint John River are both correct (with the nod going to St. John River)."

Images of St. John

How did they get those photos of St. John? If you have ever been to St. John, it is one of the most visually boring places along with the rest of New Brunswick in the Western Hemisphere (in contrast to the rest of the Maritime Provinces) if not the world. The city itself is literally just a giant shopping mall. Stevenmitchell (talk) 19:32, 24 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It is actually a pretty nice place, with distinct culture. Fred. and Monct. are extended malls/sprawl. St John's being Can's oldest city has a respectable downtown. It is dominted by Irving Oil, with plants all around it, and has been hit by suburban blight, for sure, but it is still NB's best city, IMHO. Renaming of Allison Grounds to honour Mabel Peters

Jul 16/09 - Article in the Saint John Telegraph Journal with regards to the renaming of the first playground in Canada, being renamed to honour the women who travelled across Canada and US to encourage playgrounds. This is noted under "Notable Firsts".

Metropolitan area

We need to limit the article to the city limits. We really need a higher level article for the metro area. Otherwise, we run the risk of violating WP:TOPIC. Temporarily, at least, we can have some metro stuff in here until we can set up a higher-level article. But we need to break those out clearly so the reader (and editors!) know which is which. I agree with this, an article should be made for Greater Saint John similar to Greater Moncton and Greater Shediac. I will probably get around to doing it in a few months if no one else starts it beforehand as this article is getting quite large. Also a History of Saint John similar to History of Moncton would also help to solve the large article (Slow Loading) that this page is becoming.Hogie75 09:52, 12 December 2012 (UTC)

Saint John

Saint John is actually titled Saint john because the river was discovered on Saint John the Baptist day by Samuel de Champlain. we are not called Saint just to easily be distinguished from Newfoundland's St John's —Preceding unsigned comment added by 142.166.78.186 (talk) 11:29, 16 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, the city was called St. John up until the 1920s when they decided to change the first part from "St." to "Saint" to avoid confusion with St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. Mister Slypere (talk) 20:49, 2 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

French name for Saint John

Please stop changing the French name of Saint John to Saint Jean. Saint Jean is in Quebec. The official French name of Saint John is Ville de Saint John. A city's name is proper like a person's name. When my friend Pierre visits from Montreal, we call him Pierre, not Peter, because Pierre is his name. The only officially translatable municipality in NB is Grand Sault/Grand Falls. Canada's Most Irish city references

Regarding the reference for "Canada's Most Irish city" there is, and has been for many years, a billboard shaped like a shamrock in the city's downtown core (bottom of King Street) that makes this claim ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/iflynn/3399100933/ ) and that counts down the days to Saint Patrick's day. It's published in various tourist pamphlets ( http://www.tourismsaintjohn.com/contentfiles/file/Irish.pdf ) and the city's website ( http://www.cityofsaintjohn.com/Historic-sights.html ) There may be a way to verify this (if it is empirically true) through a comparison of the ethnic origin percentages for Canadian cities from census data, but I don't know how to do it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 23.16.26.111 (talk) 02:36, 29 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

What is history? What is not?

The History of Saint John, New Brunswick contains the probably forked history from here. It should be, but isn't summarized here. When I tried to insert one important item, the Great Fire, it was reverted with the comment that all history should be in History of St. John. This thought is incorrect. A summary should be performed, either all together (I don't have time) or piecemeal.

What is left is a shameless WP:PEACOCK subsection of "firsts" which hardly tells a person anything about St John's actual history. In some cases these incorrectly contained the names of WP:NN people, and I deleted them. Also deleted was at least one notable person, whose "first" had nothing to do with St John. He just happened to be born there (non-WP:TOPIC). The first Ms Canada was WP:NN because it's the only thing she ever did, I suppose. Again, nothing to do with St. John. Agree. The history should be a summary of History of Saint John, New Brunswick and the 'shameless WP:PEACOCK subsection of "firsts"' should be deleted and/or have its items moved elsewhere. Furthermore, the forked history article needs an overhaul it has too much detail that is already duplicated and triplicated in the dozens of articles about the military history of the Maritimes. --Cornellier (talk) 14:24, 5 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Social movement unionism

An editor has twice added a long paragraph about "social movement unionism", describing how port workers in Saint John protested against sending heavy water to Argentina. The source cited was this one, and seems to be the only source available regarding this incident. The incident does not appear notable enough for inclusion. The input of others would be appreciated. Article Improvements

Hey there, I’ve noticed quite a few improvements that could be made to the article.

  • Firstly, the “History” section doesn’t feel long enough and doesn’t encapsulate enough of Saint John’s history. Although there is a separate article, I feel like more could still be done to create a good summary of the city’s history.
  • Architecture subsection should have actual description about Saint John’s architecture, instead of a list of some buildings in the city.
  • Parks and nature subsection, I just created this as there previously was nothing regarding this, but more needs to be added.
  • Neighborhood subsection should have more description relating to the neighborhoods and would be better in prose form.
  • Demographics section, I rewrote the first paragraph and included more relevant information about Saint John’s demographics, but a lot more can still be done.
  • Municipal Government section should be either expanded or removed.
  • Media section needs more examples and descriptions of Saint John’s Printing, Television and Radio media. I plan to add all three of those as topics.

Various other improvements will definitely have to be made, but these are just a few I can list off the top of my head. B3251 (talk) 21:54, 31 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
