English: Larger view of the Valley Pike region in Virginia surrounding the area where the Battle of Cedar Creek (near Cedar Creek, Strasburg, and Middletown) was fought on October 19, 1864, in the American Civil War. Closeup shows the Cedar Creek - Hupp Hill - Strasburg - Middletown area of Virginia. Gordonsville was a railroad target favored by General Grant. Early retreated to New Market after the battle. Sheridan was in Winchester when the battle started, an overnight stop while returning from a meeting in Washington, DC.
