On our way back to Lyttelton we get a good viewof some fine coast scenery which the darkness preventedus from seeing on the southward journey ; also of theSouthern Alps at sunset, covered with a purple haze,behind sporadic groups of hills in the middle distancewhich have all the appearance of extinct volcanoes.At 8 oclock we arrive at Lyttelton pier, and take leaveof the Governor and Lady Ranfurly, the Premier, andother kind and agreeable friends who have accompaniedus on the New Zealand part of the tour. The hos-pitality and kindness we have received will long remaindeeply impressed in our memories. There is a peculiarcharm about the country and the people, which is feltby every one who has visited this Britain of theSouthern Seas. To the energetic Premier, Mr.Seddon, who is an embodiment
