Hello... I am working with several histories of Frederick County and the role a Charles Trail played in the civil war as part of the first brigade, Potomac Home Brigade.. ...John Thomas Scharf notes in his Frederick County history ...

First Regiment of Infantry, Potomac Home Brigade.'—Companies A, B, D, and I of this regiment were recruited in Frederick County ; C, in Baltimore City ; E, F, and H, in Washington County;G,in Baltimore, Carroll, and Frederick Counties ; and K, in Baltimore City and Frederick County. All were mustered into the United States service at Frederick City during the summer and fall of 1861.

The original field-officers were William P. Maulsby,Sr., colonel ; George R. Dennis, lieutenant-colonel;and John A. Steiner, major, all of whom were residents of Frederick City.

In August the President appointed Wm. P. Maulsbury colonel, Chas. E. Trail lieutenant-colonel, and Lewis P. Fiery, of Washington County, major of the First Regiment of the Potomac Home Brigade, seven companies of which were mustered into service and encamped in August near the turnpike, about a mile and a half north of Frederick.

The wiki article currently shows the commander as Colonel Roger E. Cook. Scharf says in the article that Cook was a captain, not a colonel in Company A. I would propose revising the commander listing to reflect this info... but at the moment would only add Trail as a subordinate to Maulsby and link to the Trail page.

As noted above, the regiment was organized and first commanded by Col William P. Maulsby, Sr. Maulsby was mustered out on 25 Aug 1864. Ltc Roger E. Cook likely filled the vacancy until he was mustered out. It appears that only Cook transferred with the veterans of the regiment to the 13th Maryland Infantry. Cook was promoted colonel of the 13th Maryland Infantry on 24 Feb 1865 and mustered out with that regiment on 18 Apr 1865. His service records indicate that he was mustered out on 29 May 1865 at Baltimore. More research needs to be done to figure out the gap in his service record after the 1st Maryland Infantry, PHB mustered out and his transfer to the 13th Maryland Infantry. I edited the 13th Maryland Regiment, and I think it would be better if these two pages were joined as the 13th regiment was made from the 1st. The 13th Regiment has barely any history, while there is many with the 1st. Thomas Prestwich (talk) 02:46, 22 June 2018 (UTC)Thomas[reply]
