Hoard is an unincorporated community in Wood County, located in the U.S. state of Texas.[1] According to the Handbook of Texas, Hoard had a population of 45 in 2000.
History
Hoard was most likely named after the owner of a local mill. When the Missouri Pacific Railroad built a track through the settlement in 1873, the mill operated near it, but went out of business before a switch was to be built by it. 150 people lived in Hoard in 1910 and had a commissary in operation. In the mid-1930s, the community had several scattered houses, a church, three businesses, a factory, and a sawmill. Hoard had a population of 25 in 1945. U.S. Highway 80 grew to four lanes of traffic and there were only several scattered houses in the area in 1960. Two decades later, some new houses were built, and it had three businesses. The population grew to 45 in 2000.[2]
Geography
Hoard is located at the intersection of U.S. Highway 80 and Farm to Market Road 1801, 6 mi (9.7 km) east of Mineola in southern Wood County.[2]
Education
Sometime before 1870, the community had a school called Democrat School. It had 112 students enrolled in 1932.[2] Today, the community is served by the Mineola Independent School District.
