I'm surprised that there's no mention of his mentoring Stephen Sondheim. —  MusicMaker5376 01:15, 5 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

As of now we have this: "His advice and work influenced Sondheim, a friend of the Hammerstein family from childhood. Sondheim has attributed his success in theater directly to Hammerstein's influence and guidance.". I don't think it's strong enough though. Hammerstein didn't just advise, guide, and influence Sondheim, he actually gave Sondheim specific assignments over a period of years, and Sondheim dutifully turned them into Hammerstein to critique. It's not an exaggeration to say that Sondheim studied the writing of musicals under Hammerstein. Morever, considering Sondheim's status, this tutelage constitutes a significant contribution to musical theatre.TheScotch (talk) 09:13, 30 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Although the pronunciation of Hammerstein's surname is often anglicized, to /ˈhæmərstiːn/ HAM-ər-steen, isn't it perpetuating that mispronunciation when Hammerstein himself kept a more German pronunciation of the vowels, /ˈhæmərstaɪn/ HAM-ər-stine. When a man pronounces his name a certain way and all of his contemporaries also pronounce it that way why do we validate the mispronunciation of his name by saying "Hammerstein's surname is often anglicized, to /ˈhæmərstiːn/ HAM-ər-steen?" I've always heard the name pronouced HammerSTINE, not HammerSTEEN. I think the article as it stands is making way too big a deal of this. Let's have some documented evidence of the mispronunciation or else not mention it. TheScotch (talk) 08:59, 30 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The article says: "His grandfather was Polish-born German theatre impresario Oscar Hammerstein I." I don't think that's correct, as his grandfather was born in Prussia in a region that would not be polish until almost a hundred years later.
