I am concerned about the lack of source citation for the early life of Samuel Nicholas, suspecting someone has crafted a mythological genealogy for him. That Samuel was associated with the Philadelphia Monthly Meeting (PMM) of Quakers is attested by his burial in the Friends Arch Street Cemetery as well as by entries related to him in the PMM's records. [See Hinshaw, Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy, Vol 2, p. 399] However there is no record that I have been able to find of an Andrew Nicholas marrying a Mary Shute. You will find, however, in PMM's records that an Anthony Nicholas, son of Samuel, married a Rebecca Shute, daughter of Thomas, on 16 Jan. 1735 [listed as 1734-11-16 in Hinshaw, p. 607]. However, Rebecca died a year later and Anthony married Mary Cowman on 3 Jan. 1740 [listed as 1739-11-3 in Hinshaw, p. 607] If Samuel was born of Anthony, his mother was Mary Cowman. That Anthony had a son named Samuel is attested by the will of Anthony's brother John, who died in 1755, leaving legacies to the three children of his then deceased brother Anthony, naming them as Samuel, Mary, and Sarah. [The Statutes at Large of Pennsylvania, 1682-1801, Vol. XI, p 17-21] Anthony had died in 1751, when Samuel was about seven years of age. Thomas Shute, the father of Rebecca, died in 1748 [Philadelphia Will Book j, p. 5] His will listed his surviving sons, none of whom were named Atwood. The only mention of an Atwood Shute in Hinshaw is an 1745 entry by which it is noted that Ann, the wife of Atwood had died [p 420]. There is, however, an entry in the PMM records for the women's meeting, dated 19 Septmber 1758, in which is stated that Atwood Shute, the "uncle" of Mary Nicholas (sister or half-sister to Samuel) gave his permission for Mary to marry Jonathan Copeland, that permission being given since Mary's father was by then deceased. Assuming the title of uncle was not honorary, the entry might be taken as suggesting that Mary was born of Anthony Nicholas' first wife, Rebecca, thus making Atwood Shute a brother to Rebecca, in spite of the will of Rebecca's father, Thomas Shute, not naming Atwood as a son. Atwood might well have assisted Samuel to get an education, but being an uncle to Mary does not make him anything but an honorary one to Samuel since Samuel was born not of Rebecca but of Mary Cowman. However, there may be another explanation for the uncle relationship between Atwood Shute and Mary Nicholas which would extend itself to include Samuel. The Cowman family was also intermarried with the Shute family. For example Nathan Cowman married a Mary Shute, on 1732-8-1 [sic. Should probably be 1732-1-8 making it 8 January 1733] at the PMM [Hinshaw, 495, 651]. This does not quite solve the mystery, however, since this Mary Shute (also a daughter of a Thomas Shute) had just arrived from the Sarum MM in England, presenting her certificate in September of 1732.
