The style of this portrait is reminiscent of the work of Andrew Plimer (1763-1837) a successful miniaturist who worked primarily in London. A typewritten note that accompanies the locket identifies the sitter as the son of Daniel and Anne Claus and grandson of William Johnson and states that he is 27 years old. The portrait is mounted in a copper metal locket with a top suspension loop. Under the backing glass is a centre insert with the monogram "CDC" over plaited brown hair. Curiously the monogrammed initials are not his, but might relate to his father. An illegible and faded inscription on a backing paper offers no further clarification of the identity. There is also a miniature of the same sitter at the age of 10 years in the collection / Selon la note dactylographiée qui accompagne le médaillon, le sujet de la miniature est le fils de Daniel et d'Anne Claus et le petit-fils de William Johnson; il est âgé ici de vingt-sept ans. Le jeune homme est représenté en buste, vêtu d’un manteau brun et d’une cravate blanche, contre un ciel stylisé en arrière-plan. Le portrait est monté dans un médaillon de cuivre, muni d’un anneau en sa partie supérieure. Sous le verre, au dos, se trouve une plaque ornée du monogramme « CDC » et placée sur une mèche de cheveux bruns entrelacés. Aussi curieux que cela puisse paraître, les initiales du monogramme ne sont pas les siennes, mais seraient plutôt celles de son père. Une inscription illisible et estompée sur le papier au dos du médaillon n’apporte aucune autre précision sur l’identité de la personne désignée par le monogramme. Il existe aussi dans la collection une miniature du même sujet à l’âge de dix ans. |
