The quality of this article is terrible, far beyond the worst I've ever seen on Wikipedia. The article contains many statements which are more opinion than factual, and its factual statements are given without references. I suggest that most of the article be scrapped and the remainder merged with the article 'Adivasi'. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.129.163.205 (talk) 14:20, 7 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

What really happened to the Tribal population of India after the Independence!

I quote from the main article: The quality of life of tribal people during pre-independence period was more deplorable and their main occupation was hunting, gathering of wood and forest products and primitive shifiting cultivation. Due to destruction of forest and non availability of proper facilities, tribal were forced to lead a miserable life. After independence with the adoptation of Indian constitution in 1950 special attention was given for the upliftment of the tribal people under the ‘’article 48’’,it was mandatory on the part of the state government to make all the efforts to improve economic, social, and educational standard of the tribal people. Due to the welfare programmes tribal communities also made themselves conscious about their own clans upliftment. Now tribles are engaged in struggle for survival. They seek identity, autonomy equality and empowerment. They became more vibrant with new expectation, they are moving out of their isolation to participate in all struggles in all institution as equals. In context of trible study, we know that they are very rich in their art and culture and the study of tribes and their culture has always been a fascinating one for all researchers. The fascinating things are their folk dances, folk songs, their own typical kind of language. The existence of such things must be preserved to understand the ancient culture of human being.

The writing above is more or less a very silly kind, more or less what comes in Indian government publications.

The truth is very different. Before Independence, many of the tribal population were more or less independent and quite nicely protected from outside intrusions by the British laws in force. Their exact status as independent from the local native rulers was also not disturbed. However, after independence, they were unilaterally declared to be part of the Indian nations, with no sense that their acquiescence is this regard is actually required. They were made to be part of the local state and their children made to learn the state language. After forcefully made to learn the local language, they were made to exist at the very bottom of the feudal content of the state vernacular.

The idea may be clear from this example. In the state of Kerala, there are many tribal population. In the district of Wynad, for example, the forests areas went in for massive deforestation after independence and the forest dwellers such made to come out into the open with nothing to show as their own. In the local Malayalam language, which they were then forced to study, almost all of them exist at the lower level. They are the Nee, Avan, Avan, Avattakal etc. It was more or less a sort of terrible despoiling of a people.

A few of these persons may enter into the government services through the reservation kept for them, but then the vast majority simply rot away. The situation is not comparable to an English education, but that of being made to learn a feudal language, so that a terrible suppression can be imposed on them by the sly use of feudal Malayalam words.

All talks of 'equals' etc. given in the main article is only the irresponsible talk of some government employee. See this minute video clip I had got of the tribal revolt for the return of their usurped land. This tribal revolt was brutally crushed and the female leader beaten up in the police station, with many media persons within hearing distance. But none of them made it an issue. For, the general talk was of a servant class rightfully kept in their place.

There is enough and more evidence that the tribal females have been exploited by the others including the government officials. Many years ago, there were jokes in the government departments that they went in for improving the tribal by means of 'hybridisation'

The same despoiling of the tribal people is going on everywhere in the Indian nation. Even in the Andamens and Nicobar, which was handed over to the Indian nations, by the British, without any idea of if this was what the natives there wanted. --Ved from Victoria Institutions (talk) 04:03, 18 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
