Quad cities?

  • Quad means 4 - someone has named 5 cities. One of them doesn't belong with the Quad Cities. It is the Quint Cities when the fifth one is added. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.77.4.184 (talk) 14:41, 21 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

--> Reply to "unsigned," above: It is indeed the "Quad Cities" despite the name referring to 5 municipalities. Sorry, that's just the way it is. See Quad_Cities for history. Xwordz (talk) 22:05, 19 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I agree w below above comment. Quad means four. If five places are listed as the "quad" cities, people are going to think the place is backward and uneducated. 152.52.0.3 (talk) 17:44, 4 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Comments from User:Coreyjahns, April, 2006

Moline sounds crappy.

  • The 2000 census for Moline is 46,646, not 43,768.
  • Moulin is French for mill. Ville is French for town. Therefore, if Moline really were from the French mill town, it would be called Molineville. --Coreyjahns 03 March 2006 (UTC)
  • Maybe some people care about knowing which neighborhood has more Mexicans than which, but it sounds a little racist too me. Instead, why not talk about the rich history of the region, of the Fox and Sauk Indians, and Chief Black Hawk? That might be of more value to the world...
  • The whole Neighborhoods section should be re-written by someone who can write...
  • I added the "location", "air travel", and "major interstate highways" sections, given not having included them was a glaring omission... you people who actually live in Moline should be ashamed that some guy sitting in San Jose, CA who hasn't lived in Moline in 20+ years has to do this. Plus, I seem to be the only guy who adds comments on this discussion page, but on the off chance that someone might someday read this; it would be very nice if the person who originally wrote the "neighborhoods" section took another whack at it so that it didn't sound so snooty and/or racist. Remember, you're in Moline, after all... If I get around to it, I'll refresh my rememory and add some of Moline's rich history -- but with luck, maybe an actual resident will beat me to the punch. --Coreyjahns 03 April 2006 (UTC)
  • I cleaned up the "schools" section so it reads better. --Coreyjahns 03 April 2006 (UTC)
  • I added a "sports" section by rearranging the existing text from the top to a stand-alone section, and editing it so it reads better... --Coreyjahns 03 April 2006 (UTC)
  • BTW, somebody/anybody please feel free to edit and/or add to my changes. I welcome it. I am especially curious about the I74 highway -- if anyone wishes to chime in... remember, I am currently ~2000 miles away, so I don't have as good a resource as someone who can simply drive over and have a look.  :) --Coreyjahns 03 April 2006 (UTC)
  • I am moving "schools" above "neighborhoods" as school information seems to be more important... --Coreyjahns 03 April 2006 (UTC)
  • Added a "gambling" section. --Coreyjahns 03 April 2006 (UTC)
  • Added external links to the "schools" section. --Coreyjahns 03 April 2006 (UTC)
  • Although I am really loathe to touch the "neighborhoods" section as I find it to be terribly condescending and racist, I don't think the world is getting an accurate picture of Moline by reading the snooty drivel of some backwood goober. So, I'm going to edit it as best I can... --Coreyjahns 04 April 2006 (UTC)
  • Neighborhoods section is a work-in-progress as it is very large. Downtown subsection is done. --Coreyjahns 04 April 2006 (UTC)
  • Floreciente subsection of Neighborhoods section: I removed is the primary entry point for the city's increasing Mexican population because that is just plain crazy racist. Also, I took out Also, there are scattered restaurants and townhouses in the eastern part of the neighborhood, making this neighborhood more traditionally urban than most other parts of the city. because it is one of most stupid phrases ever set loose upon the written English language and I am forever more stupid for having read it. I would do the world a favor and not subject them to it... --Coreyjahns 04 April 2006 (UTC)
  • Old Town subsection: Removed the traditional home of the rather large Belgian and Dutch population in the city. In recent times, the Mexicans from Floreciente have moved up into this neighborhood which has seen a good amount of integration. Along the 7th Street business district, which is the lifeblood of the neighborhood, there are traditional Belgian businesses, the Belgian Village and DeRoo Funeral Home being the most known, right by newer Mexican ones, such as Maria's Mexican Restaurant. I find all of this offensive and racist. --Coreyjahns 04 April 2006 (UTC)
  • I'm done for now... if anyone, Wikipedia Admin Overlord or otherwise, has any comment, question, criticism, or anything else to communicate about any of the changes I've made, I would welcome the message: coreyjahns@gmail.com. --Coreyjahns 04 April 2006 (UTC)
  • Added the Landmarks, Notable Bridges section. --Coreyjahns 04 April 2006 (UTC)

I don't have time to right now, but the interstate part needs to be rewritten I think. Interstate 70 does not come here and it is not north-south.

It the beginning of Interstate 74 that runs through Moline. I live here and was considering doing some work on it too. --Talen Soti 20:38, 11 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • For the record, most (not all, as I still see my writing on the Moline page) of my contributions were removed by Wiki Admin Overlord ESkog in what can only be termed an overzealous and unwarranted abuse of Admin privileges, all because I made some kind of admin error when adding content. (For what's its worth, the discussion between ESkog and myself can be found on his Discussion page.) After admitting his/her error, he/she invited me to resubmit the contributions all over again. I don't think so... --Coreyjahns 10 April 2006 (UTC)
  • Niether Browning Field or Wharton Fieldhouse were WPA projects as they both predated the New Deal. --WilliamCBennett 14:23, 16 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • How about something about what makes Moline special, or a fun place to live? Something about the riverboat casinos that are closeby or the other things that make the place special, and not just a rundown of the neighborhoods. This wiki entry should appeal to outsiders, not self-glorify those who live there. --corey 18:24, 10 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • How about adding external links for the schools so people can easily click over to the school's website? --corey 18:24, 10 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • How about a Notable Landmarks or Items of Interest section(s)? Maybe a section called Famous People From Moline or Historical Significance? What about the outdoor life, such as boating or camping? There must be something that you Moliners can talk about that provides evidence that the place is more than a bunch of neighborhoods and a couple of highways. --corey 21:18, 11 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I-74

I-74 is actually an East-West route, not a North-South. Technically, at least. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Uac1530 (talk • contribs) 20:29, August 11, 2006‎

Page Needs Work

It is my personal opinion that the entire Moline page should be deleted and recreated to show the city as it truly is. The original is so poorly written and presented that is makes is difficult to edit and refine. I have done extensive re-writing of the history section and of the moline centre and overlook areas of the neighborhood section. I plan to do more to make this page truly informational and help people realize the great city I know Moline is.

If you truely want to make this a great page, make sure that you style it after Springfield, Illinois. That is a Good Article (GA) which was modeled after Detroit, Michigan which is a Feature Article (FA). Make sure everything in it is cited. I will help here and there, where possible, but I have enough projects on mine not to worry about Moline. You may also want to break out your camera, go around the city and take photos of the important places. Upload them to Commons and put them in the article. Pictures always make an article better.--Kranar drogin 22:30, 9 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I have rated this a Start. It would get a "B", but nothing is cited.--Kranar drogin 03:06, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Pronounciation

People, please! Moline is not pronounced "moe LEEN". 152.52.0.3 (talk) 18:59, 6 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Miscellaneous anon comments from November, 2009

The History section is great. The Neighborhood section continues to be boring. Someone, get rid of it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 152.52.0.3 (talk) 17:39, 4 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No mention of Ken Berry? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 152.52.0.3 (talk) 17:34, 4 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Arena football is defunct.

400,000 visitors per year to the Commons? This "fact" is not cited. I find the statement highly dubious, or at least... wishful thinking. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 152.52.0.3 (talk) 17:32, 4 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Population

Where are people getting the population figures from? They've been amended right up to 2010, but they referenced a source from 2007. Surely if people know these figures, they also know where they got them, and could provide a ref please? For now, I've marked it {{cn}}. Best wishes DBaK (talk) 07:59, 28 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Additions?

I'm inexperience, so sorry in advance.

Altitude: should' this be a standard piece of information?

In support of Cory's fine comments: Geographically a distinctive thing about Moline is the prominent river bluffs of the Mississippi and Rock Rivers and the resulting networks of dendritic ravines that are common in much the city. Because the mach of the ravine system has left intact, Moline is a highly forested city noticeably abundant urban wildlife. JPhilipW (talk) 21:20, 1 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Neighborhoods section

The following discussion is closed and will soon be archived.

The neighborhoods section is a significant concern. Not only is it entirely uncited, it is chock-full of the type of promotional bumf that would even make a realtor blush. (Neighborhood X is home to "upper-class families", Neighborhood Y has "eclectic" homes, "neighborhood Z has a range of historically significant homes"?) What is the purpose of this text - relative to project scope? Without supporting references or attribution of the opinions described, it seems overtly promotional in tone. Of a type inappropriate to the project. Similarly, the "list of businesses in Mall A" falls some way short of the relevant guideline. (For example, for myself, I do not understand how the existence of a McDonald's in a neighborhood is in any way encyclopedically notable or relevant.) If someone more familiar with the subject can take a look, that might be preferable to someone less familiar (like me) undertaking a less forgiving "cull" of all of this uncited editorial. Guliolopez (talk) 01:38, 2 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Any thoughts? If not, I will simply be removing the section. As real-estate brochure bumf which is unsuited to the project, and problematic under a half-dozen project guidelines. Not least that it is unsupported by any reliable refs of any kind. Guliolopez (talk) 00:08, 10 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Resolved Not having heard any other thoughts in the intervening 3-4 months, I have gone ahead and aggressively summarised the promotional and real-estate brochure bumf from the "neighborhoods" section. No longer is the reader subjected to uncited, promotional and unattributed editorial and commentary about "vibrant retail centers" or "successful businesses" or "new development[s] featuring luxury single-family homes" or "beautiful historic homes" or "prominent local businesses, such as [..] successful pizza parlor with locations throughout the Upper Midwest" or how they might aspire to be "upper-class families living in this excellent neighborhood". Good riddance. Guliolopez (talk) 15:45, 27 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
