The Chappaquiddick Tribe of the Wampanoag Indian Nation is a non-profit organization in Massachusetts that self-identifies as a Native American tribe, but is not recognized as a tribe by the federal government or by any state government. Members claim to be descendants of the Wampanoag, an historic Indigenous people of Massachusetts. The organization has approximately 300 members and is based in Edgartown on Martha's Vineyard.[1]

The organization maintains the Chappaquiddick Community Center in Edgartown, Massachusetts.[2]

Status

There are two federally recognized Wampanoag tribes in Massachusetts, the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe and the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head. The Chappaquidick Tribe of the Wampanoag Indian Nation does not have recognition from either the state or the federal government.

Petition for recognition

The organization filed a letter of intent to petition on May 21st, 2007.[3]
