Notes
  • Significance: The Behlow Building was constructed for Bertha A. Behlow of San Francisco, widow of Charles John Behlow co-founder of H. Liebes and Company of San Francisco. Original occupant of the first floor was Thompson, Beard and Company Department Store later to become Winship, Beard and Company. The second floor was occupied by attorneys, doctors, dentists, and exclusive dressmaker, and others. On March 8, 1932 a fire, which started in the basement totally destroyed the interior of the building. Mrs. William Fisher Sr. and Mrs. D.L. Beard, daughters of Bertha Behlow, allowed the property to revert to the mortgage holder, Ernest Streich. Contractor E.W. Doughty rebuilt the interior of the building. The lower floor exterior elevations are believed to have been remodeled at the same time. An entrance and show windows were added to the south elevation, and the configuration of the entrances and show windows on the east elevation was changed. Carithers Department Store occupied the first floor, mezzanine, and basement until October, 1972. In May, 1973 the Napa Community Redevelopment Agency purchased the property from Emiley B. Streich and Robert J. Streich.
