Meaning of the term "Inn"

"Inn" in more recent times has often come to denote a business serving alcoholic beverages, especially in North America, where they are usually alcohol-serving restaurants that have never provided lodging or serviced the needs of travellers.

Could someone please clarify where in North America this context is used? Here in the Upper Midwest, Inn still refers to a small hotel with both food and lodging.69.23.137.73 (talk) 11:44, 8 October 2008 (UTC)krumhorns[reply]
I am also unaware of this meaning for the word "inn." In my experience, an inn is usually a small hotel. Groundsquirrel13 (talk) 05:50, 22 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This article was merged with the Public house article (Public house#Inns) back in October 2010, and a redirect was setup so that looking up "Inn" takes you directly to the Public house article. I do not believe this is the right thing to do with this article, as I do not see the term "Pub" as a wider term containing the term "Inn". On Wiktionary, the term Inn is presently defined as "Any establishment where travellers can procure lodging, food, and drink." while the term Pub is defined as "A public house, where beverages, primarily alcoholic, may be bought and drunk. Many pubs also provide food and/or entertainment." Also, in other languages than English, the articles, corresponding to "Inn" and "Pub", are separated. Compare for instance German/French/Spanish/English : de:Gaststätte/fr:Auberge/es:Posada (establecimiento)/en:Inn. On the basis of the above, I am going to revert this article to the full (not redirected) article of October 2010. 90.184.5.10 (talk) 22:14, 4 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

In the United States I've seen the term "inn" used by businesses that provide lodging but not food and by businesses that provide food but not lodging. John Link (talk) 04:50, 5 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Request to delete redirect from "INNS"

Inns

I would like to delete the redirect from INNS because we are going to create a new page of our academic society called International Neural Network Society (INNS). Please check our website for verification. [1] Thanks! Ozawasei (talk) 00:27, 12 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

It would be appropriate to change the redirect from "Inns" after an "International Neural Network Society" page was created, but there is no need to do it until then.
Your wording "we are going to create a new page of our academic society" suggests that that you would have a conflict of interest writing such an article, so I advise you to read WP:COI before creating that article. If you were to contribute to an article about Society that you have a connection to, it would be advisable to explicitly declare any connection you may have to the Society, per WP:DISCLOSE.
