Leroy...

...an Asian?--72.19.91.17 (talk) 05:11, 5 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

He was part Filipino, and the Philippines are in Asia, so yes. — jwillbur 06:52, 5 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Asian or not? See talk page discussion. Since it has been shown that DEOMI isn't always reliable. --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 01:49, 30 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Asian American

Why was this article moved? Academically, Asian Americans are referred without the hyphen 1.07 million results. I ask for consensus to revert this move. I will notify others of the request per WP:CANVASS--RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 03:51, 22 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Without objections, I am moving it.--RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 10:56, 6 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Why isn't this hero listed? He's Hawaiian and I think that'd count as Asian. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:8805:5800:AD00:9C9D:6AB3:CBF8:A317 (talk) 02:23, 15 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

In fact, the MOH Society says there are 33 Asian American recipients but this article only lists 30. See bottom of http://www.cmohs.org/medal-faq.php 2600:8805:5800:AD00:9C9D:6AB3:CBF8:A317 (talk) 02:42, 15 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I emailed the MOH Society and got an answer in less than 12 hours! They sent a PDF with 34 names on it. I said a big thanks and suggested they update that web page from 33 to 34 or even put up web pages with the lists. The email they sent explicitly said 34 is the correct number. I only dabble in wiki by making small helpful edits but will see what I can do about getting the article up to date. The list they sent says 4 are "native Hawaiian" and also has an ethnic Chinese (Franics Wai) who was born in Hawaii. 2600:8805:5800:AD00:9C9D:6AB3:CBF8:A317 (talk) 13:20, 15 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
One of them is a sailor born in Hawaii named James Smith. Not sure if he's ethnically Hawaiian or not. I'm asked the MOH society if they know. This is probably where the additional 34th name comes from. 2600:8805:5800:AD00:9C9D:6AB3:CBF8:A317 (talk) 13:25, 15 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
They answered me already about Smith. These people are fast! Which all organizations operated this quick! They said on his enlistments papers he's listed as a "Sandwich Islander" which is an old name for Hawaii. 2600:8805:5800:AD00:9C9D:6AB3:CBF8:A317 (talk) 13:32, 15 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Here are the names they sent on 15 Aug 2016, they also sent some supporting info:

SMITH James, TRINIDAD Telesforo, KAHO'OHANOHANO Anthony T., MENDONCA Leroy A., MIYAMURA** Hiroshi H., PILILAAU Herbert K., NISPEROS Jose B., KAWAMURA Terry Teruo, SMITH Elmelindo R., YANO Rodney J., CALUGAS Jose, DAVILA*** Rudolph B., HAJIRO Barney F., HASEMOTO Mikio, HAYASHI Joe, HAYASHI Shizuya, INOUYE Daniel K., KOBASHIGAWA Yeiki, KURODA Robert T., MOTO Kaoru, MUNEMORI Sadao S., MURANAGA Kiyoshi K., NAKAE Masato, NAKAMINE Shinyei, NAKAMURA William K., NISHIMOTO Joe M., OHATA Allan M., OKUBO James K., OKUTSU Yukio, ONO Frank H., OTANI Kazuo, SAKATO** George T., TANOUYE Ted T., WAI Francis B., Total: 34 **Living Recipients ***Also on Hispanic List

Thanks for showing an interest in this topic and sorry I reverted your last 2 edits. Since this is a featured list, we need to make sure any additions are referenced. Even if we know he as born there, it's hard to prove he is asian without some references. Are the scans they sent you appropriate to be added to Wikisource or commons? If so we can scan those in and maybe use them as supporting refs. We still run into a little bit of a problem with Original research but it will help prove the case of including them on the list. GustavoRomeo68 (talk) 12:46, 16 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Well, there are at least 33, see the other 3 I just added. The CMOHS lists 34. I can email the list somewhere if you tell me the address but I know nothingn of Wiki Source. I can see the need for references but I'd think the wiki powers that be would want a featured list to be accurate too. Per CMOHS, before I started this there are 4 people missing. 2600:8805:5800:AD00:9C9D:6AB3:CBF8:A317 (talk) 13:02, 16 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah a lot of these articles are outdated because the main person updating them got banned. Go ahead and make whatever changes you want. I won't stop you. GustavoRomeo68 (talk) 13:31, 16 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
These changes are out of the current scope of the article, which is about Asian Americans (see Asian Americans#Census definition). If you want to expand the scope to Asian Pacific Americans, then you need to change the name of the article and modify the lede accordingly. — Myasuda (talk) 13:35, 16 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I think the article should use whatever CMOHS goes by; it would be hard to find a much more authoritative source than that. Changing the article name is probably good, just for clarity though Pacific Islanders are far closer to Asians than whites, blacks, or Hispanics. I'm starting to understand why I hear it's so hard for wiki to get and keep editors around too. If someone knows how I can submit the documents CMOHS sends me, please let me know. 199.112.128.15 (talk) 15:03, 16 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Your edits have brought the article to a state where it's now inconsistent with the definition of Asian American as used across Wikipedia. As such, it's incumbent upon you to remedy this either by explicitly changing the scope of the article or by reverting your changes. Either route is acceptable to me, but leaving it in the current state is not appropriate. — Myasuda (talk) 01:58, 17 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I wasn't done, but loud and clear. Yes suh massah. Heaven forbid let me finish per your first suggestions. No wonder wiki can't get and retain editors. GEEZ. 2600:8805:5800:AD00:9CA3:541A:7FB0:A1A8 (talk) 12:06, 17 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hardly a mature retort on your part. I wasn't rushing you. I was only making stating what I feel needs to be done. Your previous response didn't clearly indicate that you were going in either direction. — Myasuda (talk) 13:37, 17 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Cleaned up some of the mess created by the whiny anon. — Myasuda (talk) 02:44, 6 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
