The new #target: parser function

Hi, please could you check this edit, and amend if necessary? --Redrose64 (talk) 00:23, 5 January 2014 (UTC)

Thanks. I removed the link to m:Template:target since that one is constructed differently and might confused people. Do you think it makes sense to include the target wiki feature even though it's disabled on enwiki? Legoktm (talk) 01:24, 5 January 2014 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) If it is not enabled on enwiki, it should not be on the Help:Magic words page for the enwiki. Including such an item is just confusing for people looking at a Help page. At an absolute minimum, it should include an note stating that it is not enabled on enwiki. Don't make it harder for someone who is already looking at a help page for ... you know help ... to figure out what is going on.
Without the above message from Legoktm, I might have spent considerable time trying it out to eventually determine that it was not enabled. For this specific functionality, I would not have spent that time as it is not something I am currently interested in, but someone else might. If it is known not to work on enwiki, an enwiki Help page should not include it as something that can be used. Makyen (talk) 07:27, 5 January 2014 (UTC)
Err, you misunderstood my comment. The target parserfunction is enabled on enwiki, there are plenty of pages using it, but the remote wiki parameter is not enabled. Legoktm (talk) 07:32, 5 January 2014 (UTC)
{{#target:User:Legoktm}} versus {{#target:User:Legoktm|meta.wikimedia.org}} Legoktm (talk) 07:33, 5 January 2014 (UTC)
Thank you for the clarification. I should have read your original comment with more diligence. However, I still stand by the gist of what I was attempting to say. As I now understand it, on the enwiki it is:
{{#target: noticeboard }}
If that is the case would not the following be appropriate for the text:
  • {{#target: noticeboard }} - used with the MassMessage extension; see also mw:Help:Extension:MassMessage, which shows an additional option to specify another wiki on which the post is made. However, the ability to post to another wiki is disabled on the English Wikipedia.
Given that we are sending users interested in more information to a different page, we should sate that some functionality covered on that page is disabled on enwiki. This is particularly true as that page explicitly shows an example with en.wikipedia.org as the target. Makyen (talk) 08:08, 5 January 2014 (UTC)

MOS:Common sense listed at Redirects for discussion

An editor has asked for a discussion to address the redirect MOS:Common sense. Since you had some involvement with the MOS:Common sense redirect, you might want to participate in the redirect discussion (if you have not already done so). John Vandenberg (chat) 04:20, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

meh. I don't really care about that page... Legoktm (talk) 05:49, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

Bot errors

Could you fix the history of the following files: File:Heron Bommie SVII.jpg, File:Taagepera mõisa peahoone2.jpg & File:Rouge gorge familier - crop (WB correction).jpg? You're bot deleted every revision, and than only undeleted the latest one. Armbrust The Homunculus 21:11, 12 January 2014 (UTC)

Done. I need to figure out a better solution to the deleting/undeleting thing... Legoktm (talk) 05:58, 13 January 2014 (UTC)
Almost, but you restored the local file for File:Rouge gorge familier - crop (WB correction).jpg and now Commons description isn't showing through. Could you deleted the local image? Armbrust The Homunculus 07:58, 13 January 2014 (UTC)

That is a very good question. I've been wondering the same myself. Legoktm (talk) 23:46, 24 January 2014 (UTC)
Hmmm, your talk page link should be blue. Weird. --MZMcBride (talk) 23:59, 24 January 2014 (UTC)

haaretz.com redirect URLs

Prior to 2011, Haaretz.com changed its URL format from, e.g.

http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/1084296.html

to

http://www.haaretz.com/news/michael-fox-cofounder-of-israel-s-largest-law-firm-dies-at-75-1.275706

or

http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/pages/ShArt.jhtml?itemNo=353521

to

http://www.haaretz.com/news/mk-s-wife-unhurt-after-bomb-explodes-under-her-car-1.103677

or

http://www.haaretz.co.il/hasen/pages/ShArt.jhtml?itemNo=125017&contrassID=2&subContrassID=5&sbSubContrassID=0&listSrc=Y&itemNo=125017

to

http://www.haaretz.com/print-edition/features/bad-walls-make-bad-neighbors-1.53971
Information and belief
  • All URLs of the form http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/... and http://www.haaretz.co.il/hasen/... are obsolete.
  • All URLs of the form http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/... continue with pages/... or spages/... (but I don't know this for sure).
  • Some such haaretz.com URLs are dead and redirect to the Haaretz home page, http://www.haaretz.com/.
  • Most such haaretz.com URLs automatically redirect to current haaretz.com pages.
  • All such haaretz.co.il URLs are dead. They won't redirect, but some will if .co.il is replaced with .com.
  • there are over 2,000 English Wikipedia articles with links of these types.

I request a bot that reviews articles and looks for links of the form

http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/...

and for each such link, it activates that link, and

  • if redirected to the haaretz home page, add a {{dead link|date=...}} after the link (either the closing right bracket or the closing double brace of {{cite ... }})
  • if redirected to any other page, replace the link with the redirected link.

In either case, it should save the article with an appropriate edit summary.

It should also look for links of the form

http://www.haaretz.co.il/hasen/...

and for each such link, it should change haaretz.co.il to haaretz.com, activate the link, and act as noted above.

Once this is done, it needs to be run only once on the main article space. It shouldn't be needed again because Haaretz changed its URL format years ago and it is unlikely that old-style Haaretz URLs will be added into Wikipedia articles in the future. —Anomalocaris (talk) 22:37, 27 January 2014 (UTC)
