One of the main ideas behind this new project page is to try and bring together things that help with the customisation of Wikipedia (cool!) and, in particular, the English language Wikipedia. This has been inspired by discussion at WP:TS and other areas whereby many people have called for decent information about using CSS to override the template style and use their own preference. Not being a Wikipedia CSS guru I've left that bit for now, but I've made a start and hope that others can add some CSS and JavaScript tweaks that they find useful. violet/riga (t) 14:25, 28 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe the JavaScript tweaks section could just be a link to Wikipedia:WikiProject User scripts, unless you think there is some major difference. We are not so user-friendly as this page(yet), but we would be delighted to work on it, and linking that section to us would help and encourage us(and everyone) to help do this. Thanks! I'm wondering why it is OK to have User page templates but not to have regular templates (Re: the more complicated options). Isn't it the same amount of stress on the server if the same template is loaded thousands of times for the signature, even if under a User subpage? Wouldn't a better suggestion be to use: {{subst:User:Name/sig}} ? Then it only loads when the signature is made. Am I missing something here? -- MicahMN | μ 06:16, 4 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think it is possible to use a template in a signature any more. It gives me this error: "Your signature contains one or more reserved expressions; please remove them." Please correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think it is possible to use a template, and I'm going to remove it from the help page. -- MicahMN | μ 15:54, 5 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The skin amethyst was apparently deleted, I had recommended it on Wikipedia:Customisation for legacy browsers without CSS. There should be a skin not depending on CSS magic doing its stuff the old way with pure XHTML, no WP:HIDE tricks, if possible no unnecessary translations of HTML 3.2 entities to UTF-8, and proper name= anchors for <references/>.

The skin was removed because it had something wrong with it, if memory serves. I expect the exact reason is detailed in the release notes for 1.6 or the commit logs. 86.134.49.239 22:11, 14 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

1) it looked terrible, 2) it was monumentally broken in every browser I tried it in, 3) the author didn't seem to have any interest in fixing or maintaining it. It would have been particularly ugly in browsers with poor CSS support; try the old Classic or Nostalgia skins, or the totally-blank-slate MySkin for that. --Brion 00:43, 15 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Apparently I was "moved" to Classic, no problems with that - I could do without the "insert UTF-8 char." JavaScript zoo on my legacy browser with (normally) disabled JavaScript 1.1, but nice to have for legacy browsers would be a waste of time. However a hidden reset-button would be fine to accelerate the insertion of action=raw results, poor man's variant of external editor. Omniplex  02:02, 17 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I can spend hours and hours trawling through Wikis. Sometimes I would start from flags and end up in British Royalty. I wish there was a way for users to rate articles by their interest (1 to 5 stars) and some algorithm searches for articles that would interest the user. I'm thinking something similar to what Netflix is doing with their recommendations.

Hi, this may be because of the many years that have passed, but I'm not sure that I see anything on the manual page that indicates "Customisation" is preferred over "Customization" in this particular case. Also, consistency is still broken currently since the first word of the article uses the latter spelling. Esperanza has disbanded, so you should remove that element. For the rest, see Wikipedia:Sign_your_posts_on_talk_pages#Customizing_your_signature and Wikipedia:How_to_fix_your_signature. The Go and Search buttons on the Chick skin spill over into the edit box (in which I am currently typing).

Could they be moved beneath the Search box (directly above the Toolbox label).

Could the CSS for an individual language Wikipedia be altered so as to change the base font, or provide somehow an option of two?

Does a customisation of an individual User just affect the text on their UserPage, or could it be worked so that that the font choice feeds through to any page that User views on the particular Wikipedia?

I am hoping to head off a vicious edit war that is endangering the whole of one minority language Wikipedia!

I was been looking for a dummy HTML test page so that I can test CSS changes without having to every single different page to see how all the elements are rendered.
