Contested deletion

This page should not be speedily deleted because it serves as hub for climbing topics, a wide field with many articles on Wikipedia. The previous portal with a similar topic Portal:Rock climbing (a smaller scale topic than climbing as a whole) was deleted due to poor quality and inactivity. See the deletion discussion here Wikipedia:Miscellany_for_deletion/Portal:Rock_climbing.

The deletion topic starter said: "Mini-portal abandoned since 2011. No list of topics or rotation of content, just a few static pages abandoned since 2011.", none of which applies to this portal.

It also states: "I propose that this portal and its sub-pages be deleted per WP:TNT, without prejudice to recreating a curated portal in accordance with whatever criteria the community may have agreed at that time." --Hecato (talk) 08:35, 30 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Instagram links in External Links section

Hi, I noticed that in a few of the climber articles I've edited, Zerosumnet has removed Instagram links citing WP:LINKSTOAVOID, which isn't an unreasonable choice. But I'd argue that at least in climbing, official/verified Instagram profiles are de facto official websites and should be included as WP:ELOFFICIAL. For example, @brookeclimbs fulfills both criteria for WP:ELOFFICIAL — it's Brooke Raboutou's verified profile and it's where she communicates to the public about her climbing. Most athletes don't have a [athlete name].com official website where they give updates and link to sponsors and blog about themselves — that's what they use Instagram for. And WP:ELOFFICIAL clearly says "These links are normally exempt from the links normally to be avoided." Adeletron 3030 (talk • edits) 16:28, 3 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Since Adeletron 3030 believes an exception to WP:LINKSTOAVOID is warranted for Instagram linking, specifically for “climbers” as stated in the example provided above, a resolution is better discussed at the appropriate external links notice board whereby a neutral discussion can occur regarding the applicability of WP:ELOFFICIAL vs WP:LINKSTOAVOID. Although the Instagram linking topic has been discussed ad nauseam for non-climbers, maybe Adeletron 3030 has identified something unique and new for climbers. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:External_links/Noticeboard Zerosumnet (talk) 05:01, 4 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Sheesh, that's a whole lot of passive-aggressiveness! But thank you for the advice, I'll start a discussion there. Adeletron 3030 (talk • edits) 14:15, 4 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Just stating facts. Your interpretation is telling. Zerosumnet (talk) 03:20, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Is the Portal of any use?

I have been cleaning up a lot of Wikipedia climbing articles and the WikiProject Climbing pages. I was reading through the Climbing Portal and am confused as to its purpose. I can see that nobody has edited it in years. I can't see who it is for? It is not really a directory, which would be of use, and has a lot of disparate and seemingly random pieces of information? Does anybody still visit or watch these Climbing Portal pages or should it be removed? thanks and sorry for the confusion. Aszx5000 (talk) 20:04, 27 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I have just notice that the whole Climbing Portal was put up for deletion in 2019 (per above tag), but it was held as a "no consensus". Do any of the "keeps" from that AfD still watch this page? Aszx5000 (talk) 20:07, 27 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It seems not. A lot of this content is out-of-date or wrong. It is makes the WikiProject look bad (and there are very few active members there now), and makes "Climbing" look like a poorly maintained topic on Wikipedia, which I am trying to upgrade. Does anybody know how to delete, or propose to delete, a portal? Aszx5000 (talk) 19:52, 1 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I do think this portal should be re-nominated for deletion. Nobody is looking after it, and it is in poor state. It is letting the WikiProject Climbing down. Better to have proper main articles (which I am doing) then a portal. Aszx5000 (talk) 19:24, 11 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
