What is a portal?

A portal on Wikipedia is a doorway to knowledge. Portals are similar to Wikipedia's Main page, but each one is focused on the subject area indicated in its own title. In addition to some of the features the Main page has, portals have various other features, including automated ones to keep their content continually in sync with the encyclopedia itself, updated directly from its articles.

Each portal provides sample content from articles within its scope, to help readers survey the subject. Each one also presents lists of links to aid in navigating its subject's content on Wikipedia and beyond.

New design features available for use in portals include slideshows for both images and article excerpts, panoramic banners, and more. Excerpts are pulled from articles at the time a portal is viewed, so that the latest version of each is always displayed.

Portals are currently evolving, being under continuous design development at the Wikipedia:WikiProject Portals. Please feel free to join and become a participant.

P:SEE subportal - undoing the "restart"

Like the other counties in South East England, this portal is a sub-portal of Portal: South East England. What that means in practice for selected content (I'll talk about articles here but the same is true for biographies and pictures) is that there's a central list of selected articles for ALL the SEE county portals at Portal:South East England/Selections/Articles. Portal: South East England itself picks content from the whole of that page, and each subportal picks content from the relevant section - Portal:South East England/Selections/Articles#West Sussex in this case. I spent a fair bit of time and effort setting that up and making sure it worked.

I see that in January, User:The Transhumanist "restarted" this portal - essentially riding roughshod over that setup, and using the Template:West Sussex navigation template as the source for the selected articles instead, with the result that the selection of selected articles on this portal no longer matched the West Sussex selected articles at Portal: South East England.

I'd like to change it back, but in so doing am happy to add all the articles linked from Template:West Sussex to the list at Portal:South East England/Selections/Articles#West Sussex if that's deemed appropriate. My own view is that not all of those articles are necessarily suitable for inclusion as selected articles in the portal, and there are other articles we might want to include that aren't on that template (Arundel Castle is an example of an article I had previously selected for inclusion that isn't on Template:West Sussex).
