Actually -- Sigel was replaced by [David Hunter] who pushed his way down to burn Lexington, Virginia and the Virginia Military Institute. Hunter was turned back by Early at Lexington. Early took the initiative into Monocacy and threatened DC. I'm not sure how to characterize the outcome of New Market. BobCMU76 03:08 18 May 2003 (UTC)

There are a number or quotes and informative resources that have no citation whatsoever. This needs to be fixed, either by finding the original resources or deleting about half the quotes in the article

The assertion that VMI is the only school to have a battle streamer is incorrect. The Merchant Marine Academy, at King's Point, NY, holds one for World War II, during which several cadets died while serving in convoys Al-Nofi (talk) 18:17, 13 September 2011 (UTC) That is not the assertion--The fact is the entire school was called into battle is the noteworthy point. This marks the only occasion when the entire school was called into battle and fought as a unit.[reply]

• It was not the entire school, 10% of the VMI cadets remained on campus - per VMIs own Archives. The only time the entire student body of a college fought in combat was the Battle of Tulifinny where the entire corps of the South Carolina Military Academy (The Citadel) served as a unit.Pignetti (talk) 02:10, 12 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The entire last paragraph has been deleted for being TOTALLY FALSE and a long standing myth, why do VMI people keep repeating stuff they know isnt true. Keep deluding yourselves but dont post such blatant lies in public. 1) at least 23 cadets remained at VMI as guards, so it obviously wasnt "the entire corps" as claimed (per VMIs own history - http://www.vmi.edu/archives.aspx?id=6271, par. 2) 2) the entire student body of William and Mary fought against the British in a Revolutionary War battle; the entire cadet corps of Georgia Military Institute, Florida State, The Citadel and The University of Alabama fought as a unit in various Civil War battles. 3) the claim about the fixed bayonets is another example of somebody not having a clue, USMA has been parading with fixed bayonets for eons and USNA used to; the honor is afforded to MILITARY UNITS not CADET CORPS. 4) The above mentioned schools were all awarded battle streamers for their Civil War service, the Merchant Marine Academy was awarded a battle streamer for service in World War II.Bob80q (talk) 17:01, 3 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Bob80Q--please go troll somewhere else. The fact you are so insecure about your school is pathetic. Your school did not exist during the war--it was 2 separate schools and during the war, the school itself was shut down. Any claims by the citadel should also be attributed to the arsenal. Leaving guards behind to protect a campus (or post as military cadets called it) while the entire corps of cadets fight in a battle is what you do when your school is still functioning. This section is a response to an ip blanking cited information on VMI casualties. I have reverted this blanking once and another editor reverted it as well. Why is this being removed re WP:NOTMEMORIAL? IMHO this is a misreading of the policy. BusterD (talk) 20:03, 21 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I'll reply to this, although personally I don't see it as an issue of being a memorial but rather of just being too much detail. The names of the dead VMI cadets are just not notable. Yes, they died in this battle. So did 33 other Confederate soldiers, along with 96 Union ones. None of their names are listed, nor are the names of ordinary casualties listed in any other civil war battle on Wikipedia. These are ten deaths in a war that killed hundreds of thousands, and they did not die in any unique fashion. The only difference between them and the thousands of other dead is that years later those ten would become part of an ongoing tradition at a military college, which just doesn't make them important enough to be mentioned individually (Saying that ten VMI cadets died is of course fine).
